The lake this misty morning seems like it's been waiting, waiting for a thousand years To have this conversation with a boy whose heart is broken And heavy with a thousand cares We were the ones no one would have thought We were solid like the rocks beneath my feet We were the ones who'd grow old on the front porch Telling jokes and drinking sweet tea But sometimes the girl of your dreams runs off with a fool Rolls in the mud and is gone like the mist She may fall to the earth like a drop of clean rain She may run to the sea but she won't have me I stumbled on a moment that seems to be so pregnant, like anything could happen here Like I could meet an angel or fall into the darkness Or be swallowed by this beauty and just disappear Love is a beauty such as this, she draws you in and scares you to death Like a stallion to wild for anyone to ride but the lucky ones will still feel her breath Sometimes the girl of your dreams recedes like a wave You give everything but you just can't save her When the season has changed she may surface again Like a drop in the sea, but she won't have me And I know if this moment of clarity yields to the pain Just like the mist always yields to the day I may have been cut but not carved or contained You just gave me the furrows to drink in the rain I may walk with a limp but I'm gonna walk free And this won't own me, no this won't own me

Jimmy and me, best friends since we were three Played cops and robbers, patients and doctors, thicker than thieves My daddy told me that people like those gotta earn their way His daddy said "don't miss your shot, son, 'cause some boys are born on third base" Then they kissed us goodnight, with a glint in their eyes Well we grew up just fine. Jimmy went to work in the mines I went to college in Tulsa and came home to take what was mine I dug for gold in the pockets of soldiers' and farmers' sons And he dug for coal and came home with nothing but cancer in his lungs Try as we might, we couldn't find our way back to the light Well I remember that day - I was sitting in my office at the bank When Jimmy walked in and flashed me a grin I'd never seen on his face Shotgun in hand he said "it's time to pay up little man I'm here as a robber, a cop, and a doctor and a patient, my friend This is the end - our reckoning" Then he emptied the vault and left his gun out on the walk I heard the feds took him down in a barn just outside Wichita And I made a show for the cameras - thanked God and the FDIC But why does it feel like there were two souls, not one, who just almost got free Of the glint in our eyes and the cancer inside

Alki Beach 05:23
When they found her she was not the same No one spoke of the marks on her shoulders We knew each other by a common shame That we could not name til we were older And drowning, drowning Will this thing ever work again? We spent the winter up on Alki beach And the frost came sooner than expected Try to remember singing on New Years Eve I tried to call but your phone was disconnected Come find me, find me If this can ever work again Will this thing ever work again? We have seen silver waves crash on Malin Head We have run with the wolves out beyond the hedge So don't count me out babe Don't count me out babe Dress me up like a dog in a collar Take my youth and my truth and my dollars But don't count me out babe Don't count us out babe Let the cold wind blow upon your face We have come home from further places Don't count me out babe Don't count me out babe They took so much of you They took so much of me But don't count us out babe Don't count me out
